WHAT IS AUTHENTIC YOGA?

Discover the Philosophy and Practice of Authentic Yoga
At Gay Men's Yoga

Yoga is much more than physical exercise.

Whilst many people first discover yoga through movement and stretching, authentic yoga is a complete system for living. It brings together movement, breathing, relaxation, meditation and self-awareness to help cultivate a healthier body, a calmer mind and a more balanced, purposeful and joyful life.

The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word Yuj, meaning "to unite." It refers to the union of body, mind and spirit, and ultimately to the merging of individual consciousness with universal consciousness.

More than two thousand years ago, the great sage Patanjali systematically compiled the ancient teachings of yoga into what is now known as the Yoga Sutras—one of the most respected classical texts on yoga.

The Yoga Sutras comprise around 200 short teachings, known as sutras, that describe the philosophy and practice of authentic yoga. In the second sutra, Patanjali describes yoga as "the mastery of the modifications of the mind," reminding us that its true purpose is to quieten the mind and develop greater awareness of ourselves.

Whilst physical postures, known as Asanas, are the most recognised aspect of yoga today, they are only one part of a much deeper practice. Authentic yoga also includes Pranayama (the science of breathing), relaxation, meditation, self-inquiry and philosophy. Together these practices cultivate a healthier body, a calmer mind and a more balanced approach to life.

There are many ways people seek happiness, inner peace and a greater understanding of themselves.

Throughout history, yoga has remained one of the most enduring and respected pathways because it offers practical tools that help us better understand ourselves and the way we live our lives.

Yoga encourages us to become more aware of our thoughts, emotions and behaviours rather than simply reacting to life's experiences.

Through self-awareness we gradually learn to recognise what we are experiencing, acknowledge it, work with it wisely and, when the time is right, gently let it go. This simple process of awareness lies at the very heart of authentic yoga.

The origins of yoga extend far beyond recorded history.   Long before these teachings were written down, they were passed from teacher to student as a living wisdom through many generations.

Whilst there are differing views regarding the earliest origins of yoga, it is generally accepted that Patanjali was the first to systematically record these ancient teachings in what became known as the Yoga Sutras.

The complete system recorded by Patanjali is commonly known as Raja Yoga, often referred to as the Royal Path.

Over the centuries many different styles and approaches to yoga have evolved, each placing greater emphasis on particular aspects of this ancient tradition.

Today, Hatha Yoga is perhaps the best-known style of yoga in the Western world and is often where many people begin their yoga journey. At Gay Men's Yoga, Hatha Yoga is practised within the broader principles of Raja Yoga, integrating movement, breathing, relaxation, meditation and self-awareness to support physical, emotional, mental and spiritual wellbeing.

Physical Postures

Physical postures, traditionally known as Asanas, are the most widely recognised aspect of yoga today. They strengthen and revitalise the body, helping all of its physical systems function more efficiently. These include the skeletal and muscular structures, together with the circulatory, respiratory, glandular and nervous systems.

Practised with mindful awareness and conscious breathing, the postures become far more than physical exercise. They cultivate balance, flexibility, strength and presence, encouraging a deeper connection between the body, the breath and the mind. Over time, the practice becomes a form of moving meditation that develops greater awareness, inner stillness and overall wellbeing.

Meditation

Meditation is an integral part of authentic yoga and is the practice of connecting with the deepest part within ourselves. Through meditation we learn to observe the activity of the mind, becoming more aware of our thoughts and feelings, and gradually moving beyond them to experience the deep peace and contentment that already exist within us.

A wide variety of meditation techniques can be used to cultivate greater awareness, emotional balance and a deeper understanding of ourselves. With regular practice, meditation gradually becomes part of everyday life, helping us respond with greater awareness, calmness and understanding both on and off the yoga mat.

At Gay Men's Yoga, meditation is introduced in a practical and accessible way, allowing each person to develop at their own pace within a welcoming and supportive environment. A meditation session may include breathing exercises, guided relaxation, meditation practices, periods of quiet reflection and, where appropriate, an opportunity for discussion and questions. You may choose to sit comfortably on the floor or in a chair—whatever best supports your practice.

Whether you are completely new to yoga or have practised for many years, authentic yoga offers a pathway towards greater health, balance and self-understanding. It is a practice that extends far beyond the yoga mat, gently enriching every aspect of life.

I warmly invite you to experience authentic yoga at Gay Men's Yoga and discover how its wisdom can enrich your life.
